A portable phone capable of operating in cellular and satellite modes of communication is disclosed as including a main housing, circuitry located within the main housing for operating the portable phone in the cellular mode, circuitry located within the main housing for operating the portable phone in the satellite mode, a first antenna coupled to the cellular circuitry for receiving and transmitting signals in the cellular mode, and a second antenna coupled to the satellite circuitry for receiving and transmitting signals in the satellite mode. The second antenna can either be mounted to the main housing of the portable phone or housed within a flip cover coupled to the main housing. If provided, the flip cover is coupled to the main housing so as to be rotatable about a first axis and a second axis substantially perpendicular thereto. The first antenna may extend from the main housing, be printed on a surface of the flip cover, or be housed within the flip cover adjacent the second antenna.
L'invention concerne un téléphone portable pouvant fonctionner selon des modes de communication par satellites et cellulaires. La deuxième antenne peut être fixée au boîtier principal du téléphone portable ou logée dans un couvercle rabattable, couplé au boîtier. Dans ce dernier cas, le couvercle est couplé au boîtier de manière à pouvoir pivoter autour d'un premier axe et d'un deuxième axe sensiblement perpendiculaire au premier. La première antenne peut s'étendre depuis le boîtier principal, être imprimée sur la surface du couvercle ou être logée à l'intérieur du couvercle de manière adjacente à la deuxième antenne.
