ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a new and improved process for preparation of C-4' etherified anthracycline glycoside derivatives having the general formula Image I wherein R2 is tetrahydropyranyl, 6-acetoxymethyltetrahydro- pyranyl, 6-methoxytetrahydropyranyl, 6-carbomethoxytetrahydro- pyranyl, tetrahydrofuranyl, C1-C8 alkyloxyethyl or cyclohexyl- oxyethyl, or acid addition salts thereof. The compounds of formula I and their nontoxic acid addition salts exhibit both antimicrobial and antitumor activity. The new process involves fewer steps than the prior art process and gives the antibiotic end-products in higher yield.
