ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Daunorubicin (also known as daunomycin) derivatives of the formula Image (I) wherein X is Image or Image and R is -COCF3 or H which are prepared by hydrogenating 9-desacetyl-9-keto-N- trifluoroacetyldaunorubicin, an unexpectedly stable key- intermediate which is itself a new compound, are useful in treating certain mammalian tumours. The invention described herein was made in the course of work performed under a grant from the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
