This invention relates to a compound or group of compounds present in an active principle derived from plants of the species Euphorbia peplus, Euphorbia hirta and Euphorbia drummondii, and to pharmaceutical compositions comprising these compounds. Extracts from these plants have been found to show selective cytotoxicity against several different cancer cell lines. The compounds are useful in effective treatment of cancers, particularly malignant melanomas and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the compound is selected from the group consisting of jatrophanes, pepluanes, paralianes and ingenanes, and pharmaceutically-acceptable salts or esters thereof, and more particularly jatrophanes of Conformation II.

Cette invention a trait à un composé ou à un groupe de composés présents dans un principe actif dérivé de plantes des espèces Euphorbia peplus, Euphorbia hirta et Euphorbia drummondii, ainsi qu'à des compositions pharmaceutiques renfermant ces composés. Il s'est avéré que des extraits de ces plantes étaient dotés d'une cytotoxicité sélective à l'encontre de plusieurs différentes lignées de cellules cancéreuses. Ces composés sont utilisés dans le cadre d'un traitement efficace de cancers, notamment de mélanomes malins et de carcinomes spino-cellulaires. Dans une réalisation préférée, le composé est issu du groupe constitué par les jatrophanes, les pépluanes, les paralianes et les ingénanes, ainsi que par leurs sels ou esters acceptables du point de vue pharmaceutique et, plus particulièrement, par des jatrophanes de conformation II.
