ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel anti-icer/deicer agents are prepared by reacting active MgO with aqueous acetic acid containing methanol. Agents can be formulated with densities greater than that of water ice, to ensure rapid melting of ice upon application. Flash points of the methanol- containing agents are considerably raised above that of straight methanol, due to the high solute content of these agents. An unexpected feature of these agents is their dramatic increase in viscosity as temperature is lowered into the practical winter ice-melting zone. This reduces the tendency to spread, with the consequent significantly reduced evaporation of methanol. Higher density and viscosity also promote penetration of the melting front into the ice. A key feature of one class of the novel agents is the low evaporation rate of methanol therefrom under certain application conditions, due to the protective skin which automatically forms at the agent/air interface.
