Disclosed are anti-icing and de-icing compositions, methods for rendering a surface resistant to ice crystal formation, and methods for removing ice from a surface. Generally, the composition of the invention comprises a crystallization inhibitor and a freezing point lowering agent, which, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, comprise respectively methyl glucoside and sodium chloride. The anti-icing methods of the invention comprise applying the compositions of the invention in liquid or solid form to a surface. The de-icing methods of the invention comprise applying the compositions of the invention in liquid or solid form to ice on an icy surface.
