A B S T R A C T Process for preparing novel stilbene derivatives represented by the general formula (I) Image ..........(I) wherein R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halo- gen or haloalkyl, and R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, which comprises hydro- lysing the compounds represented by the general formula (II) Image ...........(II) wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above and M is chosen from -RC(R3)CH wherein R3 is as defined above, -CH2C(S)B wherein B is amino; -HC(R3)COOA wherein R3 is as defined above and A is alkyl; or -C(R3)(COOA)2 wherein R3 and A are same as defined above, in water, an organic solvent or a mixture thereof in the presence of acid or alkali, and further decarboxylating the product when M is -C(R3)(COOA)2. These stilbene derivatives possess excellent anti- inflammatory and analgesic activity.
