The present invention is directed to methods of suppressing inflammatory responses, inducing tolerance to an antigen, sti- mulating immune response to antigens, and suppressing or enhancing cell adhesion, e.g., involved in metastasis, by the adminis- tration of carbohydrate binding proteins or fragments or derivatives thereof, in particular, proteins capable of binding .alpha.-2,6 sialic acid structures and/or .alpha.2,3 sialic acid structures. Pharmaceuticcal compositions containing such .alpha.-2,6 sialic acid and .alpha.-2,6 sialic acid binding proteins or fragments or derivates thereof are also disclosed.
