Anti-microbial coatings and method of forming same on medical devices are provided. The coatings ace formed by depositing a biocompatible metal by vapour deposition techniques to produce atomic disorder in the coating such that a sustained release of metal ions sufficient to produce an anti-microbial effect is achieved. Preferred deposition conditions to achieve atomic disorder include a lower than normal substrate temperature, and one or more of a higher than normal working gas pressure and a lower than normal angle of incidence of coating flux. Anti-microbial powders formed by mechanical working to produce atomic. disorder are also provided. The invention extends to other metal coatings and powders similarly formed so as to provide enhanced solubility.

On décrit des revêtements antimicrobiens et un procédé permettan t de les déposer sur des instruments médicaux. On élabore ces revêtements en déposant un métal biocompatible, par des techniques de dépôt en phase vapeur, pour y produire un désordre atomique tel qu'on obtient une libération prolongée d'ions métalliques suffisant à donner un effet antimicrobien. Les conditions de dépôt pré férées qui permettent d'obtenir ce désordre atomique comprennent une température de substrat inférieure à la normale, et une pression de gaz de travail supérieure à la normale et/ou un angle d'incidence du flux de revêtement inférieur à la normale. On décrit aussi des poudres antimicrobiennes, créées par usinage mécanique, qui p ermettent de produire ce désordre atomique. L'invention englobe d'autres revêtements métalliques et d'autres poudres métalliques créés de manière similaire de façon à offrir une solubilité améliorée.
