In the treatment of water, both potable water and wastewater, many processes rely on a disinfection stage. That stage is generally at the tail end of the process and is meant to kill pathogens prior to release of water from the treatment system. Chemical disinfection is a widely used technique. Two of the most popular chemical approaches are the use of Chlorine and Ozone. Both of these widely used chemical agents have issues with toxicity to humans during the disinfection process, potential to create secondary chemical compounds that can create enduring environmental concerns, and chemical degradation of equipment. Many chemical disinfectants are very effective at killing a broad spectrum of biological pathogens but are generally toxic, corrosive, staining or discolouring, and environmentally unfriendly, and as a result need post application follow through such as rinsing off exposed surfaces or neutralization with water or other chemicals.
