The present invention includes a method for reducing viral, bacterial, protozoan, fungal and other parasitic contamination from a biological solution. Biological solutions include, but are not limited to, solutions comprising blood, a blood component, cell culture or a component of a cell culture. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided, a method of inactivating a pathogen in blood or blood product in a container, comprising contacting at least one of said blood, blood product and container with a composition of the present invention. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided, a medical device comprising at least a surface treated with an anti-pathogenic composition of the present invention or containing at least an anti-pathogenic composition of present invention. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided, an anti-pathogenic composition for use in disinfecting fluids and biological tissues and surfaces contaminated with fluids and/or biological tissues, which comprises an anti- pathogenic amount of at least one quaternary ammonium compound in association with an acceptable carrier. A preferred anti-pathogenic composition of the present invention further comprises a bisguanidine compound. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for inhibiting in vitro or ex vivo infection or replication of human immunodeficiency virus in a biological fluid, comprising treating said biological fluid with an effective inhibiting amount of a bis-guanidine compound or a derivative thereof, and at least one quaternary ammonium compound in combination with a pharmaceutically carrier, such as DMSO.
La présente invention concerne un procédé pour réduire la contamination virale, bactérienne, protozoaire, fongique et par d'autres parasites, d'une solution biologique. Les solutions biologiques comprennent, entre autres, des solutions comprenant le sang, une composante sanguine, une culture cellulaire ou une composante de culture cellulaire. L'invention a pour objet: un procédé pour inactiver un agent pathogène dans le sang ou dans un produit sanguin contenu dans un récipient, ledit procédé comprenant la mise en contact d'au moins l'un des éléments mentionnés que sont le sang, le produit sanguin et le récipient, avec une composition de l'invention; un dispositif médical comprenant au moins une surface traitée avec la composition anti-pathogène de l'invention, ou contenant au moins une composition anti-pathogène de l'invention; une composition anti-pathogène destinée à être utilisée dans des liquides de désinfection et des tissus biologiques et surfaces contaminés avec des liquides et/ou des tissus biologiques, comprenant une quantité anti-pathogène d'au moins un composé d'ammonium quaternaire en association avec un excipient acceptable, une composition anti-pathogène préférée de l'invention comprenant également un composé bisguanidine; un procédé pour inhiber l'infection <i>in vitro</i> ou <i>ex vivo</i> ou la réplication du virus d'immunodéficience humaine dans un liquide biologique, comprenant le traitement dudit liquide biologique avec une quantité efficace pour l'inhibition, d'un composé bisguanidine ou d'un dérivé de celui-ci, et d'au moins un composé d'ammonium quaternaire en combinaison avec un excipient acceptable du point de vue pharmaceutique, tel que DMSO.
