ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A filter apparatus for use with smokestacks, comprising: a smoke collector mounted opposite and spaced from the chimney outlet to collect the smoke emitted from the chimney; a tube, opening at one end into the collector and at the other end into a lateral aperture in the chimney. A turbine mounted in the tube draws the smoke from the collector towards the chimney aperture, whereby a substantially closed circuit is defined for the travel of the smoke. In the tube, the smoke is first washed by water jets, then by steam jets and is then filtered in an electrostatic filter. If the gases contain living micro- organisms, these are killed in a burner.
