A split resistant wooden railroad tie is provided with a plurality of spaced vertical holes throughout the length of the tie to inhibit expansion or propagation of splits that are developed during use and to enable the ties to be more efficiently impregnated with preservatives. Wooden ties are generally cut in rectangular blocks, with the grain generally extending in the longitudinal direction thereof. Each tie is treated by first drilling holes throughout the entire length of the ties and then treated with preservatives. The holes not only prevent further propagation of splits, they provide additional surfaces for breathing during drying and for absorbing preservatives during chemical treatment.
Une traverse de chemin de fer en bois résistant au fendillement dotée d'un certain nombre de trous verticaux espacés sur toute sa longueur de manière à bloquer l'expansion ou la propagation des fissures qui se produisent pendant l'utilisation et à permettre aux traverses d'être mieux imprégnées par les produits de conservation. Les traverses en bois sont généralement de section rectangulaire, le grain du bois se trouvant généralement dans leur sens longitudinal. Le traitement de chaque traverse consiste d'abord à percer des trous sur toute sa longueur et à appliquer ensuite des produits de conservation du bois. Les trous ne font pas qu'empêcher la propagation des fissures, ils offrent des surfaces additionnelles pour que le bois respire pendant le séchage et absorbe les produits de conservation pendant le traitement chimique.
