A device for seismic isolation is invented to be placed under a superstructure, such as a building, a structure, or heavy equipment, so as to facilitate unhindered horizontal movements of the super- structure under earthquake, and thereby reduces the seismic forces transmittable to the superstructure. The device is designed to operate within a pair of bearing plates placed under a base mat. The flattened facets of the device provide control to the horizontal movements, help to reduce the bearing stresses to the bearing plates and to the base mat, and prevent unneeded movements under frequent or minor disturbances such as wind storms. The stepwise rolling action bypasses the limitation posed by the high friction coefficients found among common material of construction that would hinder the required free motion. The present invention replaces the need for expensive state-of-the-art seismic isolators, which rely on elaborate elasto- meric fixed-bearings, or elastomeric sliding assemblages involving special treated low-friction steel or alloys. The invention enables seismic isolation to become a practical and affordable tool for millions of people dwelling in high-seismic areas of the world.
