The present invention provides antiviral compositions that comprise one or more of an ionic multivalent metal component, e.g. ionic zinc or a ferric salt, a cationic polymer such as chitosan or poly (dimethylaminoethylmetacrylate), and a cationic surfactant such as benzakonium chloride or benethonium. The present invention also provides methods for making and using such antiviral compositions.
