Novel derivatives of 1-deoxynojirimycin are disclosed which have thio or sulfinyl substituents at C-2 or C-3. They can be represented by formulae (1,11). These compounds are useful inhibitors of lentiviruses such as visna virus and human immunode- ficiency virus. Methods of chemical synthesis of these derivatives and intermediates therefor are also disclosed.
