Abstract Strains of Actinoplanes produce an antibiotic substance upon aerobic cultivation. The antibiotic is soluble in water with a pronounced band in the UV absorp- tion spectrum at 267 nm. Methods for preparing and using the antibiotic, both therapeutically and for promoting livestock growth, and composition adapted for these uses are described.
