A B S T R A C T This invention relates to the production of a now antibiotic substance, lipiarmycin, by the cultivation of a strain, Actinoplanes deccanensis A/10655 having the ATCC number 21983, under aerobic conditions in a suitable aqueous nutrient medium. The antibiotic produced is separated from the aqueous reaction medium by solvent extraction and purified by chroma- tography. It is active against a wide range of bacteria including those which are resistant to other antibiotics. It has a very low mammalian toxicity.
