ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel antibiotic designated herein MM 17880 may be obtained from the cultivation of strains of Streptomyces olivaceus and related organisms. In addition to being potent antibacterial agents, MM 17880 and its salts inhibit .beta.-lactamase obtained from many organisms so that is shows a synergistic antibacterial effect when combined with .beta.-lactam antibiotics.
