The invention provides assays for quorum-sensing autoinducer and antibiotic activities. In some embodiments a recombinant reporter gene construct in a host strain includes a reporter coding sequence under the transcriptional control of a promoter that is responsive to a selected autoinducer. In an alternative aspect, the invention provides for the use of quorum-sensing antagonists with antibiotics. In some embodiments, the co- administration of an antibiotic and an antagonist of quorum-sensing may alleviate adverse effects that would result from the induction of quorum-sensing systems by an antibiotic that would otherwise act as an autoinducer.
