The present invention is drawn to a safe, cost-effective, environmentally- friendly and ecologically-sound bioengineered product for managing imported fire ants, and a method of making this product. Immunological and genetic engineering techniques are used to generate monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) as well as viruses (phage) that display scFv heavy and/or light chain Ig fragments which exhibit high-avidity specific binding to cells of the microvilli of the midgut of imported fire ant queens. The specific monoclonal antibodies and phage displayed antibody Fab fragments are conjugated to a toxin for targeted delivery and destruction of imported fire ant queens, but not native species, thereby restoring the natural ecosystem.
La présente invention se rapporte, d'une part, à une substance produite grâce au génie génétique de manière sûre, rentable, et respectueuse de l'environnement, cette substance étant destinée à gérer la population des fourmis de feu importées; et d'autre part, à un procédé permettant de fabriquer cette substance. Les techniques des génies génétique et immunologique sont utilisées pour générer des anticorps monoclonaux (mAB) et des virus (phages) qui comportent des fragments d'Ig à chaîne polypeptidique légère et/ou lourde scFv présentant une liaison spécifique très forte vis-à-vis des cellules des microvillosités de l'intestin moyen de reines de fourmis du feu importées. Ces anticorps monoclonaux spécifiques et les fragments d'anticorps Fab des phages sont conjugués à une toxine dans le but de réaliser une administration ciblée de ce mélange et de détruire les reines de fourmis du feu importées, mais pas les espèces indigènes, ce qui permet de rétablir l'écosystème naturel.
