This invention discloses shortened chemically synthesized peptide derivatives of Hirudin. The synthesized peptides relate to a region that maintains the associated anticoagulant activity of Hirudin by binding to the fibrinogen recognition site of thrombin but not the enzymatic cleavage site. Binding of the synthetic peptides to the fibrinogen recognition site of thrombin are able to competitively prevent binding of fibrinogen to thrombin, thereby, substantially preventing fibrinogen production and clot formation. These peptides therefore present therapeutically significant adjuncts to anticoagulant therapy.
