ABSTRACT The present invention provides novel compounds which are aryloxy indanamines of the formula: Image wherein R1 is a C1-C3 alkylene; n, p and q are 0, 1 or 2; Y and X are lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, hydroxy, CF3, halogeno; R2 and R3 are hydrogen, lower alkyl, aralkyl, or R2 and R3 taken together with the adjacent nitrogen are pyrrolidino, morpholino, piperidino, piperazino, or 4- methylpiperazino, or an acid addition salt thereof. They are useful as antidepressants and as inhibitors of synap- tic norepinephrine and serotonin uptake.
