An antiepileptic agent which contains either a xanthine derivative represented by the formula (I): (I) (wherein R1, R2, and R3 are the same or different and each represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, or lower alkynyl; R4represents cycloalkyl, -(CH2)n.cndot.R5, or the formula (II); (II) and X1 and X2 are the same or different and each represents oxygen or sulfur) or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient.
