There is disclosed the use as an antifreeze and/or coolant of 3- hydroxypropionic acid, a C1 - C4 alkyl ester of 3-hydroxypropionic acid, an ammonium salt of 3-hydroxypropionic acid, a C1 - C4 alkyl ammonium salt of 3- hydroxypropionic acid, an alkali metal salt of 3-hydroxypropionic acid, an alkaline earth metal salt of 3-hydroxypropionic acid, or mixture thereof. Also disclosed are aqueous and non-aqueous solutions thereof, and blends of the antifreezes and/or coolants that additionally comprise a glycol, such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol.
