Disclosed herein are intermediates of the formula W1-Tbg-CH2-(R)-CH(CH2C(O)CMe3)C(O)OW2 wherein W1 is an amino protective group and W2 is a carboxyl protective group. Also disclosed is a stereospecific process for preparing the intermediates. The intermediates can be converted to antiviral compounds useful for treating herpes infection; for instance compounds of the formula: Image wherein R1 is (1-3C)alkyl, R2 is hydrogen or (1-3C)alkyl and R3 is (1-3C)alkyl.
