A synergistic antimicrobial composition includes (a) a mixture of a monoethanolamine complex of copper oxide and an alkylbenzyldimethylammonium salt, and (b) copper 8- hydroxyquinoline, with the weight ratio of component (a) to component (b) being from 1:0.8 to 1:15. This composition is useful in preserving wood.
