Bactericidal compositions are disclosed that comprise a polymeric compound immobilized on a material. Medical devices are also disclosed which comprise such a bactericidal composition. Methods are disclosed for covalently derivatizing the surfaces of common materials with an antibacterial polycation, e.g., poly(vinyl-N-pyridinium bromide); the first step of the methods involves coating the surface with a nanolayer of silica. Various commercial synthetic polymers derivatized in this manner are bactericidal, i.e., they kill on contact up to 99 % of deposited Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacteria, whether deposited through air or water.

L'invention porte sur des compositions bactéricides comprenant un composé polymérique immobilisé sur un matériau. L'invention concerne aussi des dispositifs médicaux qui contiennent ladite composition. Elle se rapporte également à des procédés de dérivatisation par covalence des surfaces des matériaux courants avec un polycation antibactérien, par exemple poly(vinyl-N-bromure de pyridinium), la première étape de ces procédés consistant à revêtir la surface avec une nanocouche de silice. Plusieurs polymères synthétiques disponibles dans le commerce dérivatisés de cette manière sont bactéricides, c'est-à-dire qu'ils tuent lorsqu'ils sont en contact avec 99 % maximum de bactéries Gram positif et Gram négatif déposées, qu'elles soient déposées dans l'air ou dans l'eau.
