Antimicrobial proteins capable of isolation from seeds of Aralia or Impatiens show a wide range of antifungal activity and some antibacterial activity. DNA encoding the proteins may be isolated and incorporated into vectors. Plants transformed with this DNA may be produced. The proteins find commercial application as antifungal or antibacterial agents; transformed plants will show increased disease- resistance. The invention further provides a method of expressing polyproteins in transgenic plants using DNA constructs based on the structure of the gene encoding the Impatiens antimicrobial proteins.
Des protéines antimicrobiennes, aptes à être isolées des graines d'Aralia ou d'Impatiens présentent une plage importante d'activités antifongiques, ainsi qu'un certain niveau d'activité antibactérienne. L'ADN codant ces protéines peut être isolé et incorporé à des vecteurs. Des végétaux transformés au moyen de cet ADN peuvent être produits. Ces protéines peuvent s'utiliser dans le commerce comme agents antifongiques et antibactériens. Les végétaux ainsi transformés présenteront une résistance accrue aux maladies. L'invention se rapporte en outre à un procédé d'expression de polyprotéines dans des végétaux transgéniques au moyen de produits de recombinaison d'ADN fondés sur la structure du gène codant les protéines antimicrobiennes d'Impatiens.
