The present invention involves the identification of a novel gene and protein, now designated as antioxidant protein 2 (Aop2 and AOP2, respectively). Studies indicate that the Ltw4 and Aop2 are a single gene. In addition, Aop2 also appears to be the gene responsible for the Athl trait in mice - a predisposition to atherosclerotic disease. The human homolog for this gene also has been identified. This discovery makes possible a variety of uses for AOP2 and the corresponding gene, for example, development of reagents (antibodies, expression vectors, cell lines, congenic and transgenic mice) that may be used in the diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis and related disease states.

Cette invention se rapporte à l'identification d'un nouveau gène et d'une nouvelle protéine, appelés protéine anti-oxydante 2 (Aop2 et AOP2, respectivement). Des études ont montré que Ltw4 et Aop2 sont un seul et même gène. En outre, l'Aop2 apparaît également comme étant le gène responsable du trait Ath1 chez les souris, une prédisposition à l'athérosclérose. L'homologue humain de ce gène a également été identifié. Cette découverte rend possible une grande variété d'utilisations de l'AOP2 et du gène correspondant, par exemple la mise au point de réactifs (anticorps, vecteurs d'expression, lignées cellulaires, souris co-isogéniques et transgéniques) qui peuvent servir dans le diagnostic et le traitement de l'athérosclérose et des états pathologiques apparentés.
