J. 7032 ABSTRACT ANTIPERSPIRANT MATERIALS AND COMPOSITIONS Novel antiperspirant actives are amphiphilic materials which form, upon contact with perspiration, a water- insoluble liquid crystal phase of greater than one- dimensional periodicity, e.g. a cubic (three-dimensional periodicity) or hexagonal (two-dimensional periodicity) liquid crystal structure. Examples of such actives include lipids, surfactants, emulsifiers, polymer amphiphilic complexes and block copolymer surfactants which form the required liquid crystal phase upon contact with sweat. Preferably, antiperspirant compositions comprising the novel active(s) are free of conventional antiperspirant actives, especially aluminium and/or zirconium salts.
