An oral antiplaque composition and treatment of teeth therewith wherein the essential antiplaque agent is a substantially water insoluble noncationic antibacterial phenol containing, relative to the hydroxyl group, an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, preferably tert.-butyl(t-butyl), in 2-position, and substituents in one or both of the 4- and 5-positions, one of which may be phenyl or 2',3' and/or 4' substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl phenyl, preferably 4'-t-butyl phenyl, or one or both of the 4- and 5- substituents may be alkyl or cycloalkyl, one being preferably t-butyl, or a phenanthrene containing a hydroxyl substituent in the 2- or 3-positions and alkyl or cycloalkyl, preferably t-butyl, substituents in the other of the 2- and 3-positions and in at least one of the other rings. L'invention concerne une composition buccale antiplaque et le traitement des dents avec celle-ci, où l'agent antiplaque est un phénol antibactérien non cationique et sensiblement insoluble dans l'eau, contenant un groupe alkyle ou cycloalkyle (de préférence tert.butyle (-butyle) en position 2 par rapport à l'hydroxyle et un ou des substituants en position 4 ou/et 5, ces substituants étant des groupes phényle, ou des groupes phényle substitués en 2', 3' et/ou 4' par des groupes alkyle ou cycloalkyle, (de préférence le 4'-t-butyl-phényle ou t-butyle), un ou deux substituants en 4 et 5 pouvant être des groupes alkyle ou cycloalkyle, un d'entre eux étant de préférence le t-butyle ou un phénanthrène ayant un substituant hydroxyle dans une des positions 2 et 3 et un substituant alkyle ou cycloalkyle, (de préférence t-butyle), dans l'autre des positions 2 et 3 et dans au moins un des autres cycles. L'invention concerne également de nouveaux phénols alkylés antibactériens.
