ANTISTATIC AND FABRIC SOFTENING LIQUID DETERGENT COMPOSITION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Fabric softening and antistatic liquid detergent com- positions (softergents) are disclosed which include a narrow range ethoxylate nonionic detergent (NRE), a fabric softening and antistatic cationic compound, such as a quaternary ammonium halide, and water. Other desirable components of such composi- tions include stilbene-type fluorescent brightener, anionic detergent, organic co-solvent, hydrotrope and lower alkanolamine. The proportions of such components are preferably in the ranges of 10 to 35%, 2 to 15%, 0.1 to 2%, 2 to 15%, 2 to 10%, 3 to 15%, 0.3 to 3% and 40 to 60%, of NRE, quaternary ammonium halide, fluorescent brightener anionic detergent, sodium xylene sulfonate, ethanol, triethanolamine and water, respectively. Relatively small proportions of adjuvants may also be present. The liquid detergents are of a pH in the range of 7 to 8, clear in appearance, of a viscosity in the range of 75 to 125 centipoises, at 25°C., and of improved comparative detergency (compared to control softergents based on BRE detergents) with respect to removing oily stains from laundry, especially when such laundry is being washed at comparatively low temperatures. The invented compositions (and wash waters containing the components) are superior in detersive action to compositions identical with them except for the replacement of the NRE with a broad range ethoxylate nonionic detergent (BRE), apparently because the presence of the NRE surprisingly counteracts the normally negative effect of quaternary ammonium halide on detergency in such compositions and under such conditions.
