ABSTRACT Disclosed are antithrombogenic surfaces, particularly antithrombogenic medical devices, their preparation, and materials useful in their preparation, especially an aqueous paint which may be used to coat a solid substrate to render the surface thereof antithrombogenic. The aqueous paint preferably contains water, a base, an antithrombogenic agent such as heparin, a non-leachable binder such as an acrylic acid copolymer, and a spacer material such as colloidal silica. The non-leachable binder binds the antithrombogenic agent to the surface and amongst the particles of the spacer material. The result is an essentially permanent antithrombogenic surface. C-37,588-F
