ABSTRACT A pharmaceutical composition for administration topic- ally, comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for a topical composition and an antivirally effective amount of a compound of the formula I: Image wherein R is H, halo, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, 3,4-methylene- dioxy, CF3, NO2, NH2, N(C1-4 alkyl)2, CN, OH, -S(C1-4 alkyl) or -S02(C1-4 alkyl); R1 and R2 are lndependentlv each H or C1-4 alkyl or taken together with the attached N atom are morpholino, piperidino, pyrrolidino, pipexazino or N-C1-4- alkyl piperazlno, and, when R is halo, C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 alkoxy, x is 0-3 and, otherwise, is 0 or 1; provided that when -NR1R2 is morpholino, Rx cannot be 3,4-dihalo; or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, or for the compound wherein R1 and R2 are both not H, a quater- nary ammonium salt thereof. The compositions have valuable antiviral aetivity, eg. for treatment of infections caused by a herpes virus.
