Novel tetahydroimidazo[1,4]benzodiazepin-2-thiones are disclosed which possess antiviral activity, and have the structure of formula (I): (see formula I) wherein R1 is C1-6alkyl, C3-6alkenyl, C3-6alkynyl, C3-6cycloalkyl, or C1-6alkyl substituted with aryl or with C3-6cycloalkyl; R2 is hydrogen or C1-6alkyl; R3 is hydrogen or C1-6alkyl; R4 and R5 each independently are hydrogen, C1-6alkyl, halo, cyano, nitro, trifluoromethyl, hydroxy, C1-6alkyloxy, amino or mono-or di(C1-6alkylamino); and aryl is phenyl optionally substituted with from 1 to 3 substituents independently selected from C1-6alkyl, halo, hydroxy, C1-6alkyloxy, amino, nitro and trifluoromethyl, or pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts and steriochemical isomers of Formula (I). Compositions containing these compounds as active ingredients and the use of these compounds for treating subjects suffering from viral infections are also disclosed.
