ABSTRACT A variation in shape of the shadow mask may occur owing inter alia to thermal effects in a shadow mask tube and consequently mislanding of the electron beams in the direction of the centre of the display screen may occur. The mislanding is compensated for by means of an eletron- absorbing insulating layer on the display screen, which layer has apertures which are in registration with the luminescent regions of the display screen. In the case of mislanding of the electron beams, the layer is locally charged negatively and sets up a retarding electric field between the layer and the shadow mask. The electric field deflects the electron beams away from the centre. The last- mentioned effect reduces the original mislanding.
