Disclosed is a method for evaluating the API gravity of a sample of underground formation which comprises: Solvating a known volume of an underground formation sample in a known volume of a solvent which will solvate hydrocarbons; Quantitatively measuring with a changeable filter portable fluorometer the emission fluorescence of the solvated sample at a fixed excitation wavelength with measurements of emission intensities at two points; characterizing the oil by the ratio of two emission intensities obtained at a fixed excitation wavelength; determining the yield; applying regression analysis to a data base of oils to obtain an equation which results in an algorithm value; and interpreting the value of the algorithm to give a value for API gravity and estimate in-situ oil concentration.

Description d'une méthode de mesure de la densité API d'un échantillon provenant d'une formation souterraine comprenant : la solvatation d'un volume connu d'un échantillon provenant d'une formation souterraine dans un volume connu d'un solvant qui solvatera les hydrocarbures; la mesure quantitative à l'aide d'un fluoromètre portatif à filtre remplaçable de la fluorescence qu'émet l'échantillon solvaté à une longueur d'onde d'excitation fixe en prenant des mesures des intensités d'émission en deux points; la caractérisation de l'huile au moyen du rapport entre deux intensités d'émission obtenues à une longueur d'onde d'excitation fixe; la détermination du rendement; l'application de l'analyse de régression à une base de données sur les huiles pour obtenir une équation qui donne une valeur algorithmique; l'interprétation de la valeur de l'algorithme pour obtenir une densité API et estimer la concentration d'huile en place.
