The invention relates to an apparatus for and a method of bio- logically treating organic matter. The invention provides a variable-volume containment system suitable for transportation by conventional carrier vehicles. That makes the system suit- able for use as a stationary installation (off-site) as well as a mobile one (on-site). The apparatus comprises at least two end segments which are adapted to be linked so as to form a closed unit to be sealed upon loading with the material to be treated so that the biological process may take place in a closed, sealed system. In this manner, power consumption is distinctly reduced since the gas volume to be transported and/or handled can be lowered considerably as compared to con- ventional installations. The sealed containment of the system makes it possible either to actively conduct in a circuit all the gases which escape from the material or are released dur- ing the biological process or to scrub them by means of ade- quate filters before releasing them into the environment. Monitoring of the gas composition, at the same time, may be utilized for process control. Moreover, the system poses no problem in terms of approval regulations because the treatment of the material as well as monitoring and control of process relevant parameters all take place inside the closed system so that there will be no contact between people and the matter to be treated or the resulting gases during treatment. Further- more, the instant invention is especially well suited for fully automated process operations. The invention also relates to a method by which the biological process in the closed system can be given optimum enhancement by the handling and specific aeration of the material. The kind of ventilation ap- plied clearly improves the circulation of air throughout the material and, as a consequence, the supply of oxygen to the microorganisms. At the same time, it serves as a safety means of the integrity of the system because vacuum applied to the system prevents any undesired escape of gas into the surround- ings even if leakage should occur in the system.
