The invention relates to an apparatus for closing or opening an opening, especially a bottom opening (10) of a material hopper (11) arranged above the mouth of a blast furnace having a drivable flap plate (12), which is movable into an open position leaving the opening clear and into a closed position blocking off the opening and vice- versa. The invention is distinguished in that the flap plate (12) carries out, in the region of the opening, a linear movement substantially perpendicular to the plane of the opening and, distal to the opening, a pivoting movement.
