There is provided an apparatus for controlling the infeed speed of a bag making machine (12). In one embodiment, the nip roll speed is changed from a variable speed to a fixed speed after a cycle interrupt occurs. Once a dancer arm (19) returns to an upward position, the nip roll speed changes back to the variable speed. In another embodiment, the nip roll speed is approximately equal to an av-erage line speed and the dancer (18) is trimmed to correct the speed of the nip rolls (16). There is also disclosed a method for controlling the infeed speed.
