An apparatus and method provide for automated converting of a web of a thin patterned catalyst-coated membrane to separate membrane sheets for fuel cell assembly. The membrane typically has a thickness of about 2.5 thousandth of a centimeter. Automated web converting involves transporting, with use of a movable vacuum, an end portion of the membrane web from a first location to a second location. With use of respective first and second vacuums at the first and second locations, and after removal of the movable vacuum, the end portion of the membrane web is releasably secured at the first and second locations. The membrane web is cut within a gap defined between a single catalyst pattern of the membrane web end portion and an adjacent catalyst pattern to produce a membrane sheet. The membrane sheet is precisely positioned to a desired orientation to facilitate subsequent processing of the membrane sheet.
La présente invention concerne un appareil et un procédé permettant de prendre automatiquement une bande de membrane fine où sont imprimées des traces de catalyseur et de la convertir en des feuilles séparées de membrane destinées à un ensemble pile à combustible. Cette membrane fait généralement une épaisseur d'environ 0,025 mm. Ce procédé de conversion automatisé met en oeuvre un dispositif d'aspiration mobile permettant transporter une extrémité de la bande de membrane d'un premier à un second emplacement. En se servant d'une aspiration en chacun des emplacements, et après avoir dégagé le dispositif d'aspiration mobile, on fixe de façon détachable la bande de membrane à ces deux emplacements. On coupe la bande de membrane dans les limites d'un intervalle définie entre une première trace imprimée de catalyseur sur l'extrémité de la bande de membrane et la trace suivante de façon à produire une feuille de membrane. Cette feuille de membrane est disposée avec précision selon une orientation voulue pour faciliter la suite du traitement de la feuille de membrane.
