ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A ductor roll assembly for use in transferring wet ink from a rotating fountain roll to a rotating distributor roll within a wet ink transfer system for a can decorating apparatus having a main drive system wherein the ductor roll assembly comprises at least one ductor roll but preferably comprises a plurality of ductor roll but each of which is movably mounted on a fixed support frame for movement into a contacting relationship with either the fountain roll or the distributor roll to transfer the wet ink. Individual variable control units are provided for each of the ductor rolls to move a desired number of them into the contacting relationship with the rotating fountain roll or the distrib- utor roll for any desired period of time so as to control the quantity and location of wet ink transferred from the fountain roll to the distributor roll by the desired number of the ductor rolls and wherein the control of the movement of each ductor roll is independent and separate from the main drive system.
