The present invention facilitates temperature control of a rotating mandrel during deposition of a substance on the mandrel, an example being deposition of synthetic diamond on a rotating mandrel using a plasma for chemical vapor deposition of the diamond. A deposition chamber is provide for containing heated constituents of the substance. A mandrel assembly is provided, and includes a mandrel mounted on a base. The mandrel assembly is rotatable on an axis, and the mandrel thereof has a surface in said chamber. The mandrel base has a first fin that extends outwardly from the rotation axis of the mandrel assembly. A translatable assembly, having a second fin that can overlap said first fin, is provided, the translatable assembly being translatable to change the extend of overlap of the first and second fins. Means are also provided for rotating the rotatable mandrel assembly, and means are provided for translating the translatable assembly. Heat exchange means are coupled with said translatable assembly. Means are provided for controlling the translation of the translatable assembly to control the thermal coupling between the mandrel assembly and the heat exchange means. In the method of the invention, a technique is disclosed for depositing a substance, comprising the steps of: producing a vapor containing constituents of the substance; providing a rotating mandrel assembly that includes a mandrel which is exposed to the vapor and a base having a plurality of radiator fins extending therefrom; interleaving a plurality of receptor fins with the radiator fins; and providing heat exchange to the receptor fins to cool the mandrel during deposition of the substance on the mandrel. Moving the receptor fins controls the extent of interleave thereof with the radiator fins, so as to control temperature of the mandrel. In a disclosed embodiment, the temperature in the region of the mandrel is measured, and the moving of the receptor fins is in accordance with the measured temperature.
La présente invention facilite la limitation de la température d'un mandrin en rotation pendant le dépôt d'une substance sur celui-ci; par exemple, le dépôt de diamants synthétiques sur un mandrin en rotation grâce à un plasma pour le dépôt chimique en phase vapeur des diamants. Une chambre de dépôt sert à contenir les composants chauffés de la substance. Un dispositif pour le mandrin est inclus et il comprend un mandrin monté sur une base. Le dispositif pour le mandrin peut tourner sur un axe, et le mandrin qui s'y trouve comporte une surface dans la chambre de dépôt. La base du mandrin possède une première ailette qui s'étend vers l'extérieur à partir de l'axe de rotation du dispositif pour le mandrin. Un dispositif de translation comportant une deuxième ailette qui peut chevaucher la première ailette est inclus; le dispositif de translation pouvant être déplacé afin de modifier l'importance du chevauchement de la première et de la deuxième ailettes. Des mécanismes servent également à mettre en rotation le dispositif pour le mandrin rotatif, et des mécanismes servent à bouger le dispositif de translation. Des mécanismes d'échange de la chaleur sont couplés au dispositif de translation. Des mécanismes servent à commander le mouvement du dispositif de translation pour régler le couplage thermique entre le dispositif pour le mandrin et les mécanismes d'échange de la chaleur. La méthode découlant de l'invention présente une technique de dépôt d'une substance. Cette technique comprend les étapes suivantes : produire une vapeur renfermant les composants de la substance; compter sur un dispositif pour mandrin rotatif qui comprend un mandrin exposé à la vapeur et une base comportant une série d'ailettes de radiateur s'étendant à partir d'elle; intercaler une série d'ailettes de réception avec des ailettes de radiateur, et disposer d'un moyen d'échange de chaleur pour les ailettes de réception afin de refroidir le mandrin pendant le dépôt de la substance sur celui-ci. Le fait de déplacer les ailettes de réception détermine l'importance de l'espace intercalaire entre celles-ci et les ailettes de radiateur, de façon à régler la température du mandrin. Dans une application divulguée, la température dans la région du mandrin est mesurée, et le déplacement des ailettes de réception est effectué compte tenu de la température mesurée.
