An apparatus and method is provided for detecting a temperature range or a temperature of a railroad train wheel 104 or bearing 108 wherein infrared radiation radiating from the wheel 104 or bearing 108 of a train traversing a railroad track 308 is indicative of a temperature range of the wheel 104 ox bearing 108. The apparatus comprises a sensor 408 or 508 for sensing infrared radiation 402 radiating from the wheel 104 or bearing 108 within two or more infrared wavelength ranges 506. The sensor 408 or 508 generates signals 440 indicative of the sensed infrared radiation in each of the wavelength ranges 506. A processor 434 determines a temperature range or a temperature of the wheel 104 or bearing 108 from the generated signals 440. The method detects a temperature range of a railroad train wheel 104 or bearing 108 wherein infrared radiation radiating from the wheel 104 or bearing 108 of a train traversing a railroad track 308 is indicative of the temperature range of the wheel 104 or bearing 108. The method includes sensing infrared radiation 402 radiating from the wheel I04 or bearing I08 within two or more wavelength ranges 506 of the infrared radiation. Signals 440 are generated that are indicative of the sensed infrared radiation in each infrared wavelength range 506. A temperature range or a temperature of the wheel 104 or bearing 108 is determined from the generated signals 440.
