An apparatus provides digital data representative of a compressed high definition video image signal in a manner such that a conventional video tape recorder (VTR) employing current electrical and mechanical technologies is adaptable for reading this data for display in special modes such as fast forward, reverse and still frame. To minimize the loss of data while the VTR is operating in one of these special modes, the data representative of the high definition imagesignal is decoded by the apparatus to yield available time slots in the data stream. These time slots are then filled with data which duplicates the most important of the original transmitted data then existing in other time slots in the data stream. This duplicating of the data increases the likelihood that the important picture information will be read by the VTR while operating in a special mode. To facilitate fast recovery from lost of synchronization, the apparatus utilizes a small fraction of the original image which is included in each section or slice of the transmitted image. As synchronization is reacquired, the high definition video image is built from the image found in the slices.
L'invention est un appareil qui produit sous la forme de données numériques une représentation d'un signal d'imagerie vidéo à haute définition comprimé, de telle façon qu'un magnétoscope courant utilisant les technologies électriques et mécaniques actuelles peut être adapté pour lire ces données afin de les afficher dans des modes spéciaux tels que l'avance rapide, l'affichage en sens inverse et l'arrêt sur l'image. Pour minimiser les pertes de données quand le magnétoscope utilise l'un de ces modes spéciaux, la représentation du signal d'imagerie à haute définition est décodée par l'appareil de l'invention pour produire les créneaux temporels disponibles dans la chaîne de données. Ces créneaux sont alors remplis avec des données qui sont une duplication des données les plus importantes parmi les données transmises originellement qui occupent alors les autres créneaux temporels de la chaîne de données. Cette duplication des données accroît la probabilité de lecture des données d'imagerie importantes par le magnétoscope quand celui-ci utilise un mode spécial. Pour accélérer le retour à la normale après la perte de synchronisation, l'appareil utilise un fragment de l'image originelle qui est incorporé dans chaque section ou tranche de l'image transmise. Quand la synchronisation est rétablie, l'image vidéo à haute définition est construite à partir de l'image contenue dans les tranches.
