ABSTRACT An apparatus for electrolysis of MgCl2, comprising an air-tightly sealed shell of metallic material, the shell exhibiting in horizontal cross section a rounded profile which comprises at four portions a curve selected from a quarter-circular arc and a quarter elliptical arc. Means are provided for forcibly cooling the shell from outside. A wall structure consists of insulative refractory lined along the shell. A pair of primary partitions extend in parallel with each other and across the space defined by the wall structure. An electrolysis chamber is defined by the primary partitions and two opposed portions of the wall structure. A separation chamber is provided for stripping magnesium metal from the electrolytic bath, which is separated from the electrolysis chamber by one of the primary partitions but communicating therewith by a plurality of through holes in the primary partition. At least one anode and one cathode are arranged in the electrolysis chamber with at least one bipolar intermediate electrode arranged between the anode and cathode. A top cover is provided air-tightly over the electrolysis chamber and the separation chamber.
