In known systems which transmit complex verbal messages, the recipient of a voice message must manually transcribe the spoken words if a printed copy of the message is needed. When a message must be received immediately in text form, as in situations where the message will be manipulated or acted upon automatically by a receiving computer, the sender is required to enter the words via a keyboard. This invention provides a more efficient system that enables fluent natural speech to be used as input, with the spoken words being automatically transcribed and delivered to the recipient as text. The transcribed message can be communicated either as digital codes representing text or as binary digits representing an image of the text which can be received by standard facsimile equipment. The transcription process used is an adaptation of the continuous speech recognition system of my design which substantially reduces the computation involved in word recognition to make large vocabulary continuous speech recognition achievable on widely available computer equipment. In this novel use of that technology, some components of the process function on the sending terminal while the remaining computationally intensive components function on a powerful computer located either at the recipient's office or at an intermediate point in the facilities of the communication services provider. Because the expensive central computer services a large number of terminals, this configuration is unusually cost effective.
