An apparatus and method are disclosed for removing or filtering particulate from an internal combustion engine exhaust and/or for regenerating through flow particulate traps (1a, 1b, 1c) with the incoming flow of exhaust gas. The particulate trap modules (1a, 1b, 1c) have through flow passageways (2) with porous walls (3) for filtering particulate in the exhaust gas. The passageways (2) are regenerated by periodically passing the exhaust gas therethrough at a velocity that is sufficient to erode or dislodge the soot and/or ash. Apparatus is provided to separate, burn, and store the dislodged soot and/or ash. Heating devices (19) and catalysts may also be used to aid in the removal of soot and/or ash particulate or other gaseous emissions.

L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé permettant d'éliminer ou de filtrer les particules provenant de l'échappement d'un moteur thermique et/ou de régénérer des pièges à particules (1a, 1b, 1c) à débit traversier avec le flux incident des gaz d'échappement. Les unités de pièges à particules (1a, 1b, 1c) possèdent des passages (2) à débit traversier dotés de parois poreuses (3) destinées à filtrer les particules des gaz d'échappement. Ces passages (2) sont régénérés par le passage périodique des gaz d'échappement à un vitesse suffisante à éroder ou à décoller les particules de suie et/ou les cendres. L'invention concerne également un dispositif permettant de séparer, de brûler et de stocker les particules de suie et/ou les cendres. On peut aussi utiliser des dispositifs chauffants (19) et des catalyseurs afin de contribuer à l'élimination des particules de suie et/ou de cendre ou d'autres émissions gazeuses.
