Apparatus for connecting and stabilizing adjacent vertebral segments, comprising a flexible composite connecting rod extending between the segments, and connection devices for connecting the rod to the vertebral segments The rod comprises a rod member formed of a flexible plastic material having a predetermined compression strength, and a high tensile strength, low stretch, flexible reinforcing element extending longitudinally through the entire length of the rod member and being bonded thereto. The reinforcing element may be in the form of a single cord, rope, braid or monofilament, a plurality of substantially parallel cords, ropes, braids or monofilaments, or a tubular cord, rope or braid extending through the rod member.
L'invention concerne un appareil destiné à relier et à stabiliser des segments vertébraux adjacents, ledit appareil comportant une tige de liaison composite souple s'étendant entre les segments, et des dispositifs de liaison destinés à relier la tige aux segments vertébraux. La tige comporte un élément de tige formé d'un matériau plastique souple présentant une résistance prédéterminée à la compression et un élément souple de renfort présentant une résistance élevée à la traction et un faible étirement, s'étendant longitudinalement sur toute la longueur de l'élément de tige et collé à celui-ci. L'élément de renfort peut prendre la forme d'un cordon, d'une corde, d'une tresse ou d'un mono-filament unique, d'une pluralité de cordons, de cordes, de tresses ou de mono-filaments sensiblement parallèles, ou d'un cordon, d'une corde ou d'une tresse tubulaire s'étendant sur tout l'élément de tige.
